What does P0440 mean?
The DTC P0440 (Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction) is a fault code stored by the ECU when it detects a EVAP system fault condition in the evap subsystem. It is commonly seen on European and Asian vehicles using Bosch, Continental, Siemens or Denso ECUs.
Common causes of P0440
- Loose gas cap (#1 cause)
- Cracked EVAP hose
- Failed canister vent valve
- Charcoal canister leaking
How to fix P0440
Tighten gas cap first, drive 50+ miles. If recurs, smoke test EVAP system.
